A ‘dental bridge’ is a denture used to replace missing teeth. Our teeth are precious and should be looked after, but from time to time it can be hard to avoid loosing a tooth, for a range of reasons. If you do loose a tooth, there’s no point in shying away from the world – having a dental bridge fitted allows you to retain your smile.
Your dentist may suggest a dental bridge if you’re missing one or more teeth. If you have gaps left by missing teeth, these will eventually cause the surrounding teeth to move into the empty spaces, resulting in a crooked bite. Missing teeth misalignment can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
A bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. They cover the gaps where the missing teeth are. The bridge is cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, act as anchors for the bridge. A crown is placed on the abutment and a replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crown. Just as with crowns, you can choose the material for your bridge. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.
